Am Donnerstag beginnt in Moskau das Weltmeisterschaftsmatch zwischen dem amtierenden Weltmeister Boris Gelfand (Israel). Neben dem Titel geht es um 2,5 Mio. US-Dollar Preisgeld, wovon der Sieger ca. 1,5 Mio. US-Dollar erhält. Insgesamt geht das Match über 12 Runden. Die Bedenkzeit beträgt 120 Minuten für 40 Züge, plus 60 Minuten für weitere 20 Züge. Ist bis dahin noch keine Entscheidung gefallen, gibt es noch 15 Minuten plus 30 Sek. pro Zug für den Rest der Partie. Sollte es nach 12 Partien noch Unentschieden stehen, so geht es in den Tiebreak. Boris Gelfand hatte sich über das Kandidatenturnier 2011 in Kasan, der Hauptstadt der Republik Tatarstan, im Finale gegen Grischuk durchgesetzt und damit qualifiziert.
